Colby Winegar, Storj - The DePIN Storage Layer Powering AI & Media Workloads (#56)

June 5, 2025 | 38:40 | Episode 56

In this episode of the DePINed Podcast, host Tom Trowbridge sits down with Colby Winegar, CEO of Storj, a pioneering decentralized storage protocol that has been building since 2015 before “DePIN” was even a buzzword. As Storj celebrates its 10-year anniversary, Winegar shares insights on navigating market shifts, balancing decentralization with customer needs, and why decentralized storage is a critical foundation for the cloud of tomorrow.

Storj: A Bridge Between Decentralized Ideals and Enterprise Needs

Storj offers an S3-compatible interface with a decentralized backend that leverages over 20,000 storage nodes worldwide. This ensures high availability, durability, and a unique feature Winegar calls “nuclear resistant storage” data remains accessible even if entire regions or countries go offline.

Unlike many competitors, Storj’s decentralized approach doesn’t sacrifice performance. It delivers data access 2-3x faster than Amazon’s multi-region storage at 80% lower cost. This makes it an attractive option for media companies, AI startups, and enterprises with global teams.

A Unique Leadership Journey and Ecosystem Growth

Winegar’s path to CEO is a case study in effective governance transition within the DePIN ecosystem. After a successful stint leading partnerships and sales at Storj, he replaced the previous CEO last year, bringing a business-focused mindset to scale the company from the Web3 hype cycle to sustainable revenue growth.

His background includes roles in strategy consulting, innovation management, and scaling a pioneering decentralized storage service (Space Monkey) inside a major security company. That experience taught him that real-world customers need more than decentralization, they need reliability, cost-effectiveness, and performance.

Cloud Platform Expansion and Strategic Acquisitions

Storj isn’t just about storage anymore. The company has expanded into decentralized compute via the acquisition of Valdi and innovative file-mount solutions through Petagene, giving users a seamless cloud experience. Healthcare companies like AstraZeneca, major universities, and AI startups are already on board, contributing to Storj’s 7x revenue growth in the past year.

Tokenomics and Economic Sustainability

Storj’s token model is designed for long-term sustainability. Node operators are paid in tokens at a fiat-denominated rate, ensuring predictability and reducing volatility. While currently the company uses its treasury tokens to pay operators, Winegar explains that in the next 6-12 months, Storj plans to purchase tokens from the open market, introducing organic token demand tied to network usage.

While buyback and burn mechanisms aren’t yet implemented, the team is focused on cash flow break-even first — a rare achievement in the DePIN world and plans to revisit token utility as the business matures.

Real-World Adoption and Industry Focus

Storj’s biggest challenge is demand. With ample global storage capacity available from data centers and enterprise partners, the team’s priority is building trust and integrations with industries that need high-performance, decentralized storage.

Storj’s sweet spots: media & entertainment (huge files, global teams, cost sensitivity) and AI (compute + storage synergy). This focused approach is driving consistent revenue growth and positioning Storj as a scalable, enterprise-grade DePIN solution.

Looking Ahead: A Trillion-Dollar Market and Beyond

Winegar sees Storj as a key player in the trillion-dollar cloud market. With double-digit monthly growth in compute services and a clear path to $100M+ revenue within 2-3 years, Storj is a serious contender.

As the market matures, Storj’s blend of decentralized architecture and enterprise practicality will make it a critical piece of the Web3 and AI infrastructure puzzle.
